The Government First Grade College, Kalasa, is located amidst the lush locales of the winding Western Ghats in the renowned coffee region of Chikkamagalore District in Karnataka. Nature‘s bounteous splendor is cast in the canopy of dense forest with the sparkling of the river, Bhadra and her rivulets flowing to their brim. This region is also a great tourist destination with the twin shrines at Kalasa and Horanadu. The scenic splendor and grandeur is heightened by tea, coffee, pepper and areca plantations which are a feast to one‘s eyes. Set in such an ambient and serene surrounding, the College is blissfully severed from the clamor of cities although at certain times, the very nature of its location poses extremities.
The very concept of a Degree College was through the initiative and intervention of several like-minded, well-meaning individuals who set forth to establish a higher education institution in one the rural, interior, unexplored, but potential parts of the State. This has served as a mighty boon to the people for whom higher education would otherwise have been an elusive dream. The college is a successful reality today since its inception in the year 2007 which started with only a bunch of students with a dynamism to create history. It caters to two graduation courses viz., B.A. and B. Com with a student strength of 270. It started in one of the portions of a church building in the center of the village but presently has an independent, imposing structure, in the outskirts of the village with12 classrooms. Most of the students are first-generation learners which imposes strong challenges to the institution in comparison with its other counterparts.
